The
Emerald cut Diamond like the Asscher is unique in cut compared to the other
shapes because of its elongated straight facets and step cut. It is nearly
always cut at the corners to create stability and lessen the chance of cracks
and fractures.
Its
extremely important when looking at the Emerald to consider what attributes
make some Emeralds better than others. Due to the large surface area and large
facets the clarity grade is one of the most important qualities when looking at
grades. The step cut while gorgeous in the Emerald and Asscher will show
inclusions more clearly than all the other shapes. It is a general
recommendation to look for anything in the VS Clarity range or higher and
sacrifice a little on colour. As the step cuts hold the colour better than the
brilliant cuts choosing a grade slightly lower is ok. In fact where an I colour
in a round brilliant is noticeable the I colour in the Emerald tends to show
better due to the wider facets. A qualified Jeweller is the best bet when
looking to get advice on this shape as looking at a certificate alone sometimes
isn’t good enough. Some inclusions are more noticeable than others. A good
Jeweller will know what to look for here and be able to advise against
inclusions that are black compared to clear. Black inclusions in the step cut
are easily visible and take away from the beauty of these cuts.
When
it comes to cut there isn’t a guide like there is with a round brilliant,
however there are some recommendations that typically when followed produce a
great looking Emerald. With a table and depth percentage between 61 and 68 as
well as length to width ration of 1.40 – 1.50 and no culet, it’s a good bet
you’ll end up with a excellent cut Emerald. The higher the grade in symmetry
and polish the better the Diamond so it’s preferable to have a grade of very
good or excellent here.
While
this shape has been a classic for decades and is most popular in a solitaire or
with accents it is less expensive than the round brilliant. The Round Brilliant
continues to be the most expensive of all the shapes duetoit’s waste
yield…meaning it uses more rough stone to cut this shape compared to others.
Some buyers have opted for a more ethically and environmentally sustainable
Diamond alternative. The Emerald Lab Created Diamond is
grown meaning they are created and not mined making them 100% ethically
sourced. When considering the huge
social impact and environmental footprint mining can have, lab grown Diamonds
are an ethical choice and often the only choice for conscientious couples.
Even though the Emerald is less expensive than
the high yield round brilliant it is still considerably more than the Lab Grown
alternative which in essence is the same as natural Diamonds. Either way the
Emerald is a classic, elegant shape and whether looking for natural Diamonds or
Lab grown Diamonds, this shape will continue to be in style.
